What is Global Warming?

Global warming is the continuous increase in the average surface temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans which was projected to have started since mid-20th century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded that it is most likely due to the increase of human-induced greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere.
IPCC said that global warming is apparently a natural phenomenon especially when taking into account solar variation, volcanic emissions and other natural sources of heat on the Earth’s surface. All these have also brought warming effects from pre-industrial times to 1950 and up to present. What isn’t normal is man’s infliction on such occurrence which doubles, if not, triples the rate of temperature increase to a significant level. At least 30 scientific societies and academies of science, including those in major industrialized countries have agreed upon these findings and are continuously working on a solution to bring temperature increase into equilibrium.
The effects of global warming as seen by the scientists are massive enough for countries to participate in a worldwide fight against climate change. It is touted that the continuous increase in global temperature can lead to the rising of sea level which may cause flooding, increase in the intensity of extreme weather conditions such as tropical cyclones, unpredictable amount of precipitation that may also cause flooding in some areas and drought in other parts, glacial retreat and melting of the icecaps. All these are likely to bring about economic challenges such as changes in agricultural yield, addition of trade routes, as well as increase in the range of diseases, and worse, extinction of countless animals and plants species.
The scientific community is looking into the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as the solution to global warming. More and more private and public institutions around the globe are joining the green campaign, promoting the green lifestyle. Even the consumer market has been infiltrated by this green agenda as most companies today promote green products.
